The musical Pier 21 portrays Canadians responding with compassion and personal sacrifice to war-torn people, and the experience of immigrants and refugees arriving in Canada.
On February 12th 2022, returning after a two year Covid hiatus, this musical was presented to an audience consisting of descendants of Ukrainian refugees that fled the horrors of the Soviet Union. On February 24th, history tragically repeated itself.
The Pier 21 cast donated their time for a live performance May 14th in Tsawwassen, BC, helping raise over $22,000 to support refugees coming to Delta in the Lower Mainland.
Guest speakers included recent Ukraine arrival Anastasiia Viekua, who shared her experience leaving Kyiv and then finally Lviv as bombing spread to West Ukraine.
